The location

Our apartments are located in the best two spots in Skala Maries, both being close to the beach and to the town centre, where you can find taverns and local shops. Below you may find more information about Skala Maries, its surroundings and our two locations

Skala Maries

Skala Maries  – don’t be surprised if you hear it also referred as Skala Marion- started, like many other Greek attractions, as a very small fishermen village.

Even with more houses and people passing through it still is an authentic fishermen village: you may still see local fishermen delivering freshly caught fish to the tavern owners. 

It is located in the south-western part of the island, and is known for having the best sunset views. It features taverns with traditional Greek food (check the sections below for some of our recommendations),  3 beaches and local shops with honey and olive oil.

A fun fact is (no joking) that many times when in other parts of the island is raining, here the skies are still clear. You may ask a local how the winds and the position make this happen.

Atspas Beach

One of the most popular beaches in the area, Atspas Beach is appreciated by both the locals and the tourists.

What is special about this beach? As it is located in a small gulf the water are shallow for a long distance starting from the shore, which make it perfect for families with children.  It is maintained and cleaned, also featuring a beach bar serving food and drinks.

Also if you are lucky you can sometimes spot cormorants trying to fish their lunch from the sea.

Our Blue apartments are located just across this beach, all you need to do is grab a towel (or not), cross the street and jump into sea.

Centre

The centre of Skala Maries is what you would expect from a small Greek town centre to be. Taverns, the harbour, the church, local shops (a bakery among them, of course) and the village elders overseeing everything while having their coffees.

From our Hara apartments located right near the taverns you can easily visit the two other beaches of the town: Skala maries beach and Platanes.

The first is right across the house, and its sun-beds are right near the tavern, so if you feel like having a lazy day with absolutely  no walking or driving you can give it a try. Keep in mind though it is very small and can be very crowded or noisy.

The Platanes beach takes more to get to….meaning you need 5 minutes of walking. It is wider, featuring a dedicated beach bar and since a couple of years also a small water park

Best things to do & see​ in Thassos

Below are our recommendations for your stay here, don’t hesitate to ask us for more information abut them or other attractions you would like to try out.

🥘 Where to eat

🥘  Taverna Armeno in Skala Maries, is one of the best tavern from our village. Fresh fish, traditional Greek food and the view are the perfect recipe for a nice lunch or dinner. (Taverna Armeno site)

🥘  Taverna Motorship in Skala Maries is also one of our top recommendations for eating close to our location. The terrace si right near the beach, the food is fresh and tasty, and the wine always at hand,

🥘  Taverna Pefkospilia in Pachis has a great view and very tasty food. About 15 minutes drive from our location.

🥘  Taverna Kazaviti in Kazaviti  is definitely worth trying for an authentic Greek experience. While there you can also walk in Kazaviti, it is a lovely small village

🥘 Tavern-Pizzeria Oasis in Skala Sotiros, about 15 minutes drive. Even if you are in Greece, some days you may wish for a pizza. For pizza or for traditional Greek food, Oasis tavern is one of our top recommendations.

🔭 What to see and do

🔭Maries Lake in Maries: Thassos Island in not only about sea, the mountains are hiding some beautiful places that you must see. 

🔭Kefalogourna Waterfalls in Theologos: it is a small paradise hidden in the mountains. While there, you can also stroll in Theologos, it has some of the older houses in the island.

🏖️ Where to go at the beach

🏖️  Atspas Beach in Skala Maries is the closest to our Blue locations, family friendly, with shallow waters and a beach bar.

🏖️  Salonikios Beach is one of the wildest beaches you may find in Thassos and there are chances you may enjoy it etirely on your own. Keep in mind though that getting to it an be pretty difficult for smaller cars as side road leading to it is pretty rocky.

🏖️  Psili Ammos Beach: the hip and busy beach near Potos, features beach bars and a wide beach. It can be crowded, but it’s wort giving it a try.

🏖️  Paradise Beach is one of the most known and popular beaches in Thassos.

🏖️  Karnagio Beach Bar is a chic cocktail bar in Limenaria, featuring also a beach. You may try it for the beach or just for some drinks in the evening, as the terrace lies right on a cliff overseeing the sea.

🛍️ What to buy

🛍️ Traditional bakery products: our local bakery in Skala Maries bakes fresh bread and pastries (salty and sour) every day. Make sure to get there early if you want to make sure you still find your favourites, they are in high demand.

🛍️ Local olive oil and honey products: right in the centre of Skala Maries, near the taverns you will find Meladiko, a small shop selling honey and honey products made by a local family. We know them and their bees so we definitely recommend giving it a try. You will also find olive, honey and other local products in supermarkets or markets.

🛍️ Jewels: maybe you already heard about the famous Iris Gold jewellery factory. They sell jewelries made in their own factory and also from other producers. The offer is very various, ranging from small gifts to exquisite pieces. If you are staying for more days you may also make custom orders or even get your wedding rings here.

🛍️ Sweets: Greeks are known for their sweet tooth, and there is a huge offer of various sweets. The ones we recommend to try and to buy some gifts from are  Boris Artisan Bakery (https://www.facebook.com/borisartisanbakery/)  and  Os Ev Parestite in Limenaria (https://www.facebook.com/oseuparestite/)

🛍️ Supermarkets: the most popular supermarkets in Thassos are Masoutis (closest one to us) and  Latsouris (bigger, but at about 30 minutes drive).
